Pediatric Catheter Supplies

Learning that your child needs to use a catheter can feel like a major life adjustment. Whether you are managing a condition like Spina Bifida or recovering from surgery, your goal is to make the process as gentle, fast, and stress-free as possible for your little one.

At Numotion, we specialize in pediatric catheters designed specifically for smaller bodies and sensitive skin. From soft materials to a variety of lubricants we provide the products you need to help your child stay active, healthy, and confident at school and at play.

Understanding Your Child’s Options

A pediatric catheter is specifically designed for smaller bodies, typically ranging from 6 to 10 inches in length, with varying French sizes, or diameter. Choosing the right catheter for kids depends on your child’s age, activity level, and whether they are learning to self-catheterize.

Pediatric Straight Catheters
  • Child-Sized Design: Shorter and more manageable than adult versions, making them easier for parents to handle or for kids to use independently.
  • Materials: Available in soft PVC, 100% Silicone (latex-free), or flexible Red Rubber to suit your child’s comfort and sensitivity.
  • Best For: Routine use at home where a bathroom is easily accessible.
Closed System Catheter Kits
  • All-in-One System: These feature a pre-attached collection bag, allowing your child to catheterize safely even when a clean, private restroom isn’t available.
  • Sterile Environment: Kits often include gloves and antiseptic wipes to maintain a “touchless” process.
  • Infection Control: Closed systems with introducer tips are often chosen for children prone to frequent UTIs because they are designed to reduce contact with bacteria at the urethral opening.
Pediatric Coudé Tip Catheters
  • The Curved Tip: The slight curve at the end helps the catheter navigate past scar tissue, strictures, or unique urethral curves that might feel “blocked” with a straight catheter.
  • Comfort First: If your child experiences resistance or discomfort during insertion, a Coudé tip can make the process much smoother.

Choosing the Gentlest Lubrication

Because a child’s urethral tissue is extremely delicate, choosing the right lubrication is key to a painless experience. Here are the three most common styles for pediatric catheters:

Uncoated
  • The Benefit: You have complete control over how much gel is used for your child’s comfort.
  • How it Works: You manually apply a gel lubricant packet to the catheter before insertion.
  • Best For: Parents who have a preferred lubricant brand or are managing a specific budget.
Pre-lubricated Gel-Based
  • The Benefit: No messy gel packets to open. This is a great kids’ catheter for school because it simplifies the steps for school nurses or for children learning to self-cath.
  • How it Works: The catheter is pre-coated with a smooth gel.
  • Best For: Busy families, school days, and children who want a faster routine.
Hydrophilic
  • The Benefit: The coating is chemically bonded to the catheter, so it stays slippery from start to finish. This helps reduce friction, which may decrease minor urethral irritation that can contribute to discomfort and infection risk.
  • How it Works: The coating is activated by a small sachet of sterile water or saline inside the pack. Once “popped,” the catheter becomes instantly and uniformly slippery. Some hydrophilic catheters are available ready to use out of the package, and don’t require this additional step.
  • Best For: Children prone to frequent UTIs or those who experience anxiety or resistance during insertion.

Safety Features for Your Child’s Health

Modern pediatric catheters include specialized design details that make pediatric intermittent catheterization cleaner, safer, and more comfortable.

Introducer Tip

This is a small, soft tip found on many closed system catheters for children. It allows the catheter to bypass the bacteria naturally found at the opening of the urethra.

Sachet

A small water or saline packet found inside coated hydrophilic catheters that activates the coating on the catheter, causing it to be slippery for ease and comfort during catheter insertion and removal.

Gripper Sleeve

A sliding sleeve that allows you or your child to guide the catheter without touching the catheter with your fingers. This “no-touch” method provides a better grip and reduces the risk of accidental contamination.

Pre-lubricated Design:

Catheters that are coated and ready to use the moment they are opened. These are the most convenient kids’ catheters for school or playdates, as they require no extra steps or messy gel packets.
