Intermittent self-catheterization (ISC) is the preferred method of bladder management, as it promotes independence, a lifestyle free from bags and tubes, and it is a safe and effective way to manage overall bladder and urinary tract health. While it’s not uncommon to feel a little uncomfortable when you first start ISC, it should not be painful. If you experience pain, it’s a sign that something isn’t quite right, and it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider. 

When you begin ISC, your body may need some time to adjust. It’s normal to feel nervous/anxious/scared/etc about beginning ISC; some individuals may experience mild pressure or resistance, a slight stinging sensation, or some initial sensitivity in the urethra. These feelings and sensations typically improve as you become more familiar with the process.
